Girl Under Glass #11: You Don’t Know Me — Six Sentence Sunday

Hi-dee-ho, Sixers! Welcome back for another Six Sentence Sunday installment from Girl Under Glass. I spent all day Saturday formatting the book for its print release, so please forgive me if I’m writing gibberish. I’ve decided to take you guys through this opening scene with Rachel and the Stranger before moving on to other things.

So here we go. Continuing from last week, when Rachel told her visitor that she doesn’t think much of his promises. (For anyone new here, the Stranger is an alien soldier who’s currently facing two snarling dogs and a woman with a loaded shotgun. You can read from the beginning here.)

Note: The first speaker is the soldier.

========

“You don’t know me, yet you threaten my life?”

“You’re Ohnenrai.” The name twisted from my lips like a curse. He was the first Stranger I’d spoken to in the twelve years since my parents had died in Ohnenrai custody.

Jack and Audie rumbled their agreement.

“You’d shoot me because I was born on another planet?”

========

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you’ll cruise over to the official Six Sentence Sunday site and follow the other links to more terrific snippets.

  • Wonderful with a touch of humor. Thanks.

    • Monica Enderle Pierce

Thank you and thanks for stopping by, Charmaine!

  • Of course she would! 🙂 Around here they still fight with people from the next valley. I dread to think what it would be like without the gun laws.

I like this and I think the death of her parents is a jolly good reason for her to be cautious.

    • Monica Enderle Pierce

Yeah, you’re right, Elin, she really would shoot him!

  • I enjoy your six every week…I really like your strong heroine!

    • Monica Enderle Pierce

Thanks, Christine. Rachel has her freak-out moments, but she keeps it together when it counts.

  • Eleri Stone

Go Rachel! Loved this book, Monica! You should be off writing the next one:)

    • I agree, Eleri! This book was incredible…and yes, sequel please???

      • Monica Enderle Pierce

LOL! I love you ladies. You know that, right? 😀

  • The tension and the conflict are great. Can Rachel overcome her understandable antagonism? Is the alien friend or foe? Great six, Monica!

  • That deserves a “Hell, yeah!” hehe

Another great six from this book. Fantastic job, Monica!

  • Yes, I believe she would shoot him for just that reason. LOL I wonder if he is truly one of them or it’s just that he was born there…

  • Great tension in this scene, and I love his slight puzzlement….

  • Wow… very intense! Great six 😀

  • Yes. I do believe I’d shoot you being from another planet. Great tension in your six!

  • Getting better and better. I especially like the dog support in this one. 🙂

  • What more reason does she need? Love the tension in this piece.

  • Tension mixed with some humor at the end, now this I like. I especially loved that last line. Will he shoot him? Great six!

  • Nice! I have to clear my review queue. I want to read this book again! Even this scene is painted differently in my mind– having read the book. Excellent, Monica! 🙂

    • Monica Enderle Pierce

Oh, I love that, Teresa. I’m so close to the book that it’s hard to get the proper perspective right now. I think it’ll probably take me a year or so to be able to read it with fresh eyes. That’s what makes reader feedback so wonderful. Thanks!

  • Heck ya, she’d shoot you. LOL. Fantastic pacing and dialogue. Can I just have an autographed hard copy? Do you have those available? If not, I’m going to have to figure this Kindle app for ipad out. It’s not working.

    • Monica Enderle Pierce

Are you having problems with all the books, the app, or just GUG? Maybe you need to dump it and download again or contact Amazon. A friend of mine got a corrupted file of GUG from Amazon; she contacted them and they fixed the problem immediately. Let me know if I can help in any way. I’m working on formatting the paperback this week, and will let everyone know when that’s available. (We’re discussing a Kickstarter Project in order to fund a hardcover version. It’ll be an autographed collector’s edition with full-color illustrated plates and an embossed cover. Limited edition. But that’s a looong way down the road.) And Thanks for being persistent!

      • I have tried to download the Kindle app for iPad. But, when I click on it, nothing happens. I can’t seem to buy books. I will delete and reinstall.

        • Monica Enderle Pierce

Ah-ha! I don’t think it’s the app. (I had this exact same problem when I first started using the Kindle app.) If you go to my book’s Amazon page, you should see a “Buy for $2.99” button in a green box on the right side of the window. Below that button, there is a message that says, “Deliver to your Kindle or other device”. When you purchase the book, your purchase window should indicate that it’s going to be downloaded to your Kindle for iPad (or prompt you to make this selection; I can’t recall which exactly).

          • cool. doing that today. Also, about to email you manuscript here shortly. Squealing.

  • Very intense scene and I love his straight forward question.

  • I’m really enjoying this stand off. The tension and detail is perfect. Great 6, Monica. Can’t wait to see what else you’re going to show us!

  • Great sense of tension in such a short space. Well done!

  • Oooh, this is intriguing! I love their interaction. You pack a lot into these six – great job! 🙂

  • This was great — I learned so much about both of them from a few short sentences. Nice tension. 🙂

  • I’m very late this week but this snippet decided me. I have this on my Kindle and it just moved to the top of the REAM ME NOW list!
