The Glass Asylum #9: Blunt (Six Sentence Sunday)

Going for brevity, tonight. It’s Six Sentence Sunday. This scene from my WIP (sequel to Girl Under Glass) takes place in a small, deep cave where Rachel’s been dumped.

========

Rachels_CavernEhtishem sealed the opening and we were cut off from all communication. He rappelled back to the floor and shed his harness.

“You’re a dick,” I said.

“For coming here?”

“For risking your life and maybe leaving Pearl without parents. She’s tough, but she’s not like Ohnenrai kids.”

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Classmate Evan Whittaker paid Julia no attention before the accident, let alone after. Now suddenly he’s volunteering to tutor her and offering to drive her home. She can’t ignore that his new obsession started after his two-day disappearance last week and that he wears a pendant she’s been drawing for months. The Glass Asylum #8: Medication (Six Sentence Sunday)

HolidayHullabaloo_Whitebackground10-21Be sure to come back every day until the 21st for a new giveaway item during the 2012 Holiday Hullabaloo!

==============================================================

Girl Under GlassHello and welcome back for another Six Sentence Sunday sample from my WIP, The Glass Asylum. We’re jumping back to Rachel’s point of view with this snippet, in which she’s about to receive some much-needed medication. (The first speaker is Ehtishem’s personal assistant, Nahnesh.)

“It’s most effective when administered into the thigh muscle or buttocks.”

“You are not shooting me in the ass.”

Ehtishem folded his arms as he settled into the couch cushions and said, “I will.”

“Not if you want your life to be bearable for the next six months, Zosh.” I glared at him, not entirely unamused, as I stood and raised my burgundy gown’s skirt to reveal a great deal of skin. Ehtishem’s gaze followed the length of my leg and then met mine.

I hope you’ll head over to the official Six Sentence Sunday site to find links for all of this week’s participating writers.

The Glass Asylum #7: Not an Idle Threat

HolidayHullabaloo_Whitebackground10-21Be sure to come back tomorrow for the first day of the 2012 Holiday Hullabaloo!

==============================================================

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Hello friends! It’s Six Sentence Sunday and I’m still featuring my WIP, The Glass Asylum. This comes from a scene following last week’s threats to dump all the Terran men back on Earth but keep the women aboard Dathusha (the Ohnenrai mothership) to act as surrogates for Ohnenrai children. This confrontation takes place in Ehtishem’s office and involves one of the Councilors who’s advocating forced separation. (The Councilor is the first to speak.)

========

“This is an outrageous misuse of your office’s powers, Zosh. I’m warning you—”

“No, you are not. But I’m going to give you a crash course in Terran culture, Sarem. They view interpersonal relationships from a wholly different approach, and I assure you that if you seek to remove the women from the Terran Sector, you will unleash enough violence and unrest to more than disrupt the operations of this ship and destabilize social order. And I will kick you in the testicles so hard they will come out of your nostrils.”

========

You know Ehtishem could do it, too.

Girl Under Glass Made a “Best of 2012″ List!

Author, Cara Bristol, has named Girl Under Glass to her Best Erotic Romances of 2012

This may puzzle some of you since GUG isn’t erotica, although it is romantic. In fact, the love scenes are sensual and implied. But that’s what makes this listing even more awesome! Cara is a well-published erotic romance author and that’s what she reads. The fact that she was so compelled by Girl Under Glass leaves me grinning from ear to ear. Here’s what she had to say about GUG:

For beaming me out of the pages and into another world, Girl Under Glass by Monica Enderle PierceGUG-Cover-small

A mother who fights to save her daughter following an apocalypse must bring herself to trust a Stranger, a member of the race responsible for it. Girl Under Glass takes place on earth in the near future and on a space ship. The writing is beautiful, the story compelling, and the setting is literally “out of this world.” A sci fi romance. A debut, self-published novel. First in what will be a series.

Check out her full list of favorites here. And if you are an erotic romance reader, Cara’s books are among the best. Highly recommended.

The Glass Asylum #6: The Keen Blade — Six Sentence Sunday

Hiya, Sixers. Thanks for coming back for another Six Sentence Sunday snippet from my romantic sci-fi WIP, The Glass Asylum.

Credit: lucasmalta/morguefile.com

Credit: lucasmalta/morguefile.com

This week’s six come from the same hearing scene as was featured last week. In this case, however, Ehtishem’s second-in-command (his Dvai) suggests a solution to the fight over whether and how the Terran women should be separated from the men aboard the Ohnenrai mother ship. (Ehtishem does not approve of forced separation.)

Translations:

Zant: yes

Fra: sir

========

“There is another solution.” Dvai Vindira said, and Ehtishem turned, surprised that she was voicing an opinion. “Since we are returning to Terra, we can relocate the men to the planet and keep the women aboard.”

Ehtishem crossed his arms and felt the keen blade of betrayal between his shoulder blades as murmurs of approval filled the chamber. “Therefore dooming their species, Dvai?”

Dvai Atala Vindira met his gaze and replied, “Zant, fra, to preserve ours.”

========

Before I send you off to the official Six Sentence Sunday site, I want to thank those of you who stop by and/or comment every week. I’ve been buried by work and life for the last few months and haven’t been able to make the rounds very diligently or even reply to your comments here. I see them, I appreciate them oh-so-much, and I hope that life will slow down after the holidays enough that I can get back to enjoying all of your work, as well. Merci!

The Glass Asylum #5: Chicken (Six Sentence Sunday)

Hello, friends! Welcome back for another Six Sentence Sunday post from my romantic sci-fi novel, The Glass Asylum. Since this is a WIP, I’m jumping around a bit. This week’s excerpt is from a meeting of the Ohnenrai governing council in which they are debating forcible relocation of the Terran women who are living aboard the Ohnenrai ship.

Note: Ehtishem is the Zosh (the supreme commander of the Ohnenrai); sarem means councilor.

========

The councilor paused to consult his compad, then said, “A production rate of eight percent live, viable offspring over one twelve-month cycle is a twenty-two percent reduction from the previous period. The Zosh claims he serves the Ohnenrai, but blocking reproduction — whether by Ohnenrai or Terran surrogates — runs contrary to that claim.”

Ehtishem studied the sarem. The man was tall and reedy with an unusual hooked nose and a long neck. His propensity to jerk his chin upward when making a point reminded Ehtishem of the speckled black-and-white chickens Rachel had kept on Terra. I should snap his neck.

========

Ehtishem’s a wee bit grumpy.

========

Thanks for stopping by. Remember to check out the other Six Sunday participants at the official Six Sentence Sunday site.

The Glass Asylum #4: Ball of Dust (Six Sentence Sunday)

Hi again, Sixers! Welcome back for another Six Sentence Sunday. Once more, I’m posting from my WIP, The Glass Asylum, which is the sequel to Girl Under Glass. This is a direct continuation from last week’s snippet in which Rachel reacts to the news that Ehtishem has visited a former lover. (Before we proceed, I just want to thank those of you who visit every week. I appreciate you taking time out of your busy Sundays to read my work.)
========

I loved Ehtishem. And that love came with sexual devotion. But, in his culture, a trip to the Nest was no more notable than a stop for coffee.

As Khaiv stacked his empty crates, I stared out the kitchen window at the brown planet that Dathusha was orbiting — Ohnenrah. My lover’s home planet was dead. Right then I wished I could feel as lifeless as that ball of dust.

The Glass Asylum #3: Personal Beliefs (Six Sentence Sunday)

Welcome back for another Six Sentence Sunday snippet from my WIP, The Glass Asylum. With the last two installments, we got a peek at Ehtishem’s struggles as he visited a former lover. Today we start to see the impact of that visit on Rachel.

(Note: Ferahi-va means thank you. Barethri means Mother and is an honorary title.)

========

“Have a good evening, Barethri,” Nahnesh said as she left the quarters.

“Ferahi-va.” I nodded but couldn’t meet her gaze, and then she was gone, and I was relieved to have escaped without needing to explain my emotions. They’d have baffled her. Monogamy, to the Ohnenrai, was a poor survival tactic; it was illogical not to spread their genes far and wide. But my personal beliefs were hard to bury.

========

Last week it was poor Ehtishem. This week it’s poor Rachel.

========

Thanks for visiting. Please hop over to the official Six Sentence Sunday site for the list of this week’s participating writers.

The Glass Asylum #1: Old Habits — Six Sentence Sunday

Hello lovely Sixers. It’s Six Sentence Sunday, and I’m gonna give you whiplash. Sorry. I’ve fallen in love with my current WIP, The Glass Asylum, which is the sequel to Girl Under Glass. So, starting today, I’ll be randomly posting from this one (in addition to First Comes Famine) during the coming months.

I’m integrating Ehtishem’s POV into this book and he’s proving to be a complex and fascinating character with inner-demons that are much closer to escaping than I ever expected. Still waters do, indeed, run deep.

This scene takes place in the Nest, which is the breeding center aboard Dathusha, the Ohnenrai ship. “Cithrem” means “breeder,” and Ghisga has been tempting him to fall back into some old, cultural habits.

========

He looked away from Ghisga’s breasts and their nearly unnoticeable scars from when they’d been surgically lifted and tightened after the birth of her last child. Looked away from the strong, tall body that she offered to him and to any other affluent Ohnenran who could move her up through the levels of the Nest because, more than most Ohnenrai women, the cithrem had power. Ghisga, who had instructed him in the many methods of sexual gratification. Ghisga who had been handpicked by Ahremena for him when he was fourteen years old. “Cover yourself. Please.”

========

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you visit the official Six Sentence Sunday site for the list of this week’s other participating writers.
